Project Outline
You will be integrated onto our Technical Team working within either our in-house biomarker product development or contract development team.
During this internship we will provide you with onboarding training and hands-on experience in a cutting-edge biotechnology company, working together with an experienced and supportive team. You will undertake experiments that will help deliver answers to business-critical questions in the area of diagnostic assay development. You will be expected to work within a project team to undertake the planning, execution and reporting of laboratory work.
We are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic and highly motivated. This internship would be ideal for anyone considering moving from academia into industry after their PhD.
Specific aims of the project will be determined when you join. Previous PhD interns have worked on areas such as: qPCR assay optimisation, qPCR/dPCR assay design, assay verification and validation studies.
We are sometimes able to also accommodate internships within our Clinical, Production and Quality Assurance teams. If this is something that would be of interest, please get in contact and we can discuss further.
Outline of duties required for the role:
• Undertake the day-2-day planning, execution analysis and documentation of technical studies.
• Carrying out the practical elements of project studies which can include: Nucleic acid extracting using manual extraction kits and or automated instruments, qPCR manual setup and or using automated instruments; Gel electrophoresis; digital PCR, Next Generation Sequencing; Precision serial dilutions; Handling and processing of biological samples.
• Accurate recording of laboratory work and experiments in laboratory notebooks or worksheets.
• Working as part of the team to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
• Take an active part in your personal development and ensure that your knowledge, skills and competencies enable you to carry out your role at the company.
• Actively contribute towards developing the company culture and provide ideas on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of processes within the company.
• Line manager will be assigned to support. Regular 1:1s will be scheduled as appropriate.
Essential Skills
Successful applicants will have:
• Excellent verbal/written communication skills
• Proven organisational skills, self-motivated with attention to detail
•Full training will be given, however experience in key laboratory techniques is desirable: e.g. processing biological samples, nucleic acid extraction using manual extraction kits and/or automated instruments, Real-Time PCR
• Proficient in MS Office (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint)
• Enthusiasm for genomics, diagnostics, and biomarker development is highly desirable
• We are seeking applicants who are enthusiastic, motivated, and ready to hit the ground running as they join our team for their internship
Skills Developed
• Develop technical/laboratory skills in a diagnostic development company
• An understanding of diagnostic assay development and requirements of working within an ISO 13485 certified company
• Gain experience working with cross-functional teams; including Clinical, Quality, Production
Number of Placements Offered: up to three student placements
Possible Timeframe
We are flexible with timeframes and can offer placements throughout the year. Minimum period of 3 months.
